Despite the terrible weather on Sunday, an intrepid bunch of Sevenoaks AC runners, 23 strong, went to Eltham to run nearly 6 miles in the most awful underfoot conditions, writes Geoff Vine.
The usual 18 teams with 384 runners from across Kent took part, slipping and sliding, sometimes falling into the mud. Streams were rivers and hills were like mountains of ice. Luckily not really cold, but just very wet.
For the Sevenoaks men first to "swim" back was 51 year old Chris Desmond in 25th place (1st M50) in a time of 35mins 53 secs. A fantastic run.
Andy Nicoll hung onto Chris for 28th place in 36.10. Close behind was Andy Ashlee 40th in 37.05 and Lee Lintern came 45th in 37.43. New member John O’Callaghan was 58th in 38.31. James Wright came 62nd in 38.39 and last scorer for the men was Daniel Witt in 38.57 for 70th place.
One really notable performance came from new recruit James Graham who at 61 years was 106th in 41.02 for 1st M60 and long time club member John Denyer took 1st M65.
Overall the men’s team were 5th in the race and climbed up one place in the season's rankings to 5th. More to come from them yet, to climb even higher.
For the Sevenoaks ladies, injury and commitments impacted performance with only 6 ladies present. They achieved 10th place on the day, but dropped to 3rd in the table for the season.
First home was Katie Wills in 18th place with 43.51. Pauline Dalton (21st) showed she is coming back to form with 3rd W50 in 44.02 and Sally Shewell (2nd W55) was very happy with 47.39 and 43rd place.
Overall the combined team are 5th this year. The full Sevenoaks AC results were:

Keith Dowson and myself ran the half marathon on 16 November, writes Dan Witt. Race started and finished from the Mercure hotel near Leeds Castle and went up the north downs in a steep climb between 3 and 5 miles then there was a sharp decent back towards the A20, a few loops through Harrietsham then back to the finish where we started.
The race came up slightly short for me at 12.91 miles but not as short as it was for Keith as he and the first 5 other runners missed a mile loop so I believe they were disqualified! My original finish as per the print out given to me at the finish was 12th in 1:29.12 but this may have been upgraded if indeed the first 6 were DQ’d. The race was a bit of a shambles to be honest, but a good work out and training run all the same.
In the official results, Dan Witt is fifth in 1:29:12, and Keith Dowson unplaced in 1:15:43. Picture is from the Kent Online website.
The second race of this season’s Kent Fitness League cross-country series took place in Swanley Park on Sunday Nov 9th, writes Jim Knight.
At 11.00 a.m. the field of 495 runners from 18 clubs throughout Kent stood in silence to show their respect for those who have died in war. Fittingly seven World War 2 planes flew overhead – hurricanes and spitfires from the Biggin Hill flypast – creating an emotional atmosphere on this very special day of remembrance.
The whistle blew, the sun came out, and the runners set off to tackle three laps of the park, made slow and muddy by the heavy overnight rain.
Sevenoaks AC had a team of 32 runners, but were missing star athletes David & Allan Lee, and Chris Desmond.
Dartford, once again fielded a strong team (28 from Dartford Harriers and a huge contingent of 60 from Dartford Road Runners)
Immediately the Dartford men went into the lead and dominated throughout the race, with Dartford Harriers taking the first 4 places. The winner was Sergiu Gaidvc in a very impressive time of 29.48 for the 5-mile course.
The Sevenoaks men’s team of Andy Nicoll (28th), Keith Dowson (34th), Andy Ashlee (48th), Lee Lintern (57th), James Beeston (58th ), Stephen Searby (64th) and James Wright (67th), finished in sixth position.
However the Sevenoaks ladies ran brilliantly to come 3rd and now lead the series. With Cath Linney in 6th position, Katie Wills in 14th and Heather Fitzmaurice in 20th, the team was only one point behind Paddock Wood (2nd) and two points behind winners Larkfield AC.
In the first race of the series (2 weeks ago in Knole Park) the Sevenoaks ladies comfortably beat both of these team and go into the third race with a one point lead over Dartford Harriers.
The combined team lies in 3rd place behind the two Dartford teams.
