Race seven, the final race, of the Kent Fitness League took place over a nearly mud-free course in lovely spring weather on 14 March. In the absence of Pauline and Cathy, Jill Bastable, with an excellent run (22nd), led the SAC women to eighth place on the day to confirm their eighth place overall in the eighteen-club series. Unfortunately, the men were three short of a full team, with James Wright our first finisher in 52nd place. Consequently the men were 17th on the day dragging the combined team to 15th. In the final standings, both the men and combined teams were 14th. Congratulations for individual series successes to Caitlin Carr, who retained her U16 title without needing to run the last race, Pauline Dalton, 2nd over-45 female and first in the 45-49 category, and Chris Desmond, 2nd over-45 male. And thanks to Caitlin and her anonymous assistant for the photos here. The SAC results were as follows:

Sevenoaks AC's under-15 boys easily qualified to run in the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships next month (13/3 see junior calendar) with fourth place in the Kent Championships at Detling on 13 February. The team of Dominic Brown (10th in 15:11), Mads Kjaersgaard (20th in 16:05), Alistair Bishop (24th in 16:12) and Jamie Monkhouse (31st in 16:58), backed up by Miles Hawes (38th in 17:41), were comfortably fourth and just two points away from third place. The team, who had needed to finish in the top seven to qualify, have had a consistently good season in the Kent League and can now go on to compete at the highest national level.
The best SAC individual performance of the day was by Megan Hawes in the under-17 girls race. Hawes was 6th in 16:52, and there were also excellent performances from Fran Taylor-Lowen (19th in 14:33) and Emily Monkhouse (30th in 15:25) in the under-13 girls race. Anders Kjaersgaard was a fine 29th in the under-13 boys, while Chris Desmond (54th in 48:29), David Lee (64th in 49:39) and Rob Carr (128th in 66:28) competed bravely in the arduous senior men's race. Eight members of the Sevenoaks AC Junior Cross Country team competed in the South of England Cross-country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields, London on Saturday 31st January. The day started with the Sevenoaks Under 15 boys team placing 25th team with individual placings of Dominic Brown 57th, Mads Kjaersgaard 152nd, Alistair Bishop 160th and Miles Hawes 220th. Sevenoaks AC Endurance Coach Darrell Smith said: "Bearing in mind Mads struggled with injury and coming off being ill this week I think we could have placed in the top 20, had we been at full strength. We were the 4th Kent team home, but again I think we are capable of getting 3rd team at the Kent Champs if the boys all have good runs".
The rest of the day was filled with good individual performances with Fran Taylor Lowen in her first cross country season placing 155th in the under 13 girls race. The Under 15 Girls had the best performance of the day from a Sevenoaks athlete: Tabitha Adams with 80th place in a race she will be back in next year. In the Under 13 boys race Matthew Johnson and Anders Kjaersgaard packed well to place 147th and 149th respectively. This race was good preparation for the coming weeks when the races come thick and fast. "From what I have seen I think we can look to see some of our athletes win Kent vests and get to Nationals in March", said Darrell Smith. Full results HERE.

After four races, the combined team has slipped one place to 14th, the women stay 8th and the men have dropped two places to 15th. Still, an enormous SAC turnout can be expected at the next match at KNOLE PARK on 21 February. The SAC results from Fowlmead were as follows:

SAC's under-13s have been very successful in the KCAA Sports Hall Championships at Tonbridge on 13 December as well as the first competition of the season at Folkestone on 1 November. Sports Hall Coach Michelle Baxter provides all the information in this report.
SAC's over-60 men's team put in a superb performance to win the Kent Veterans Cross Country Championships, held on an unfamiliar 4.8k course at Tunbridge Wells on 12th December. John Denyer was a brilliant second (20:01), Geoff Kitchener sixth (21:21) and Geoff Vine 8th (21:25) in a race held along with the women's over-35 and over-45 events. Kitchener led the entire field to 400 metres (see picture above), while Denyer and Vine stayed in contention in the early stages. As Denyer later moved into second, Vine and Kitchener were close together throughout the race, with Kitchener sprinting past Vine in the final stages. This put Sevenoaks 10 points clear of both Invicta and Blackheath, the silver and bronze teams, with 16 points to 26.
SAC also fielded a full team of four which came 8th in the 9k over-40 men's race. Chris Desmond was 19th in 34:32, James Wright 26th in 36:07, Peter Ash 43rd in 39:41 and Rob Carr 60th in 44:27. Earlier, Simon Hallpike ran in the men's over-50 event over 9k and came 38th in 40:30. Rosemary Conquest was our only female runner on the day as she contested the over-45 event, finishing 26th in 28:21.

Dominic Brown sealed a brilliant third overall in the Kent XC League under-15 boys with fifth place in the final junior event at Danson Park on 5th December. For the first time this season, the SAC BU15s failed to finish a full team on the day, but they still ended fifth in the final league table. Dominic was ably backed up throughout by Mads Kjaersgaard who was 12th in the race and 6th in the final placings. Sevenoaks were also represented by Matthew Johnson, who was 22nd in the under-13 boys, with his team finishing 7th in the league despite not completing a team in the final junior race. Johnson competed in all four races and finished an excellent 10th in the League. The only female competitor for Sevenoaks at Danson Park was Fran Taylor-Lowen in the under-13 girls who was 28th. Even the senior men failed to complete a full team of four. Keith Brown led them home in 52nd place, with David Lee in 77th, and Lyndon Collins 116th. Keith is 24th with one race still to go for the seniors, while the senior men's team is 16th. Full results HERE.
The SAC team was one woman short in the third event of the 2009/10 Kent Fitness League season, and there were only just enough men (Allan Lee attended but is barred from the KFL). Hawes was second in the under-17 girls race in 14:50, just five seconds behind winner Ellen Holmes of Tonbridge. There was no senior men's race, and no Sevenoaks representative in the senior women's event, but SAC fielded a full team in the under-15 boys for the third time running. Mads Kjaersgaard (15:27) was 8th, Dominic Brown (15:36) 10th, Alistair Bishop (17:18) 24th, and Miles Hawes (18:11) 34th. The team were 5th on the day and lie 4th after 3 races, while the two ever-presents, Brown and Kjaersgaard, lie 4th and 7th respectively with one race to go. Johnson has competed in all three races so far and lies 7th in the League. Full results HERE.

Three Club members competed in the U13 County Championships held at Erith over the weekend 18-19th September. The outstanding performer was Lewis Church, whose 1.50m in the High Jump won the silver medal, beaten only by Harry Kendall of Tonbridge AC who is ranked second at national level. Lewis also won the silver in the 75m Hurdles, only his second race in this event, in spite of one of the other competitors tripping and falling in front of him. Simone Baxter reached the semi-final in both the 75m and 150m races, also competing in the Shot Putt, Discus and High Jump. Natasha Hawksworth also reached the semi-final in the 75m and competed in the High Jump. Full results are given on KCAA PDF document, SAC results on Results page.

John Denyer was selected to compete for the Southern Counties team at the UK Inter Area match which is a veterans competition between the various regions of England and Scotland, Wales and Northern Island - 10 teams in all. The event took place in Solihull on 16 August and John competed as a M60 in the 1500m and 3000m, finishing second in both races. His best event was the 1500m were he finished in 5.11.3, a PB as an M60 and an improvement on his club record. Feeling a little tired for the 3000m, John was a little slower than in other races this summer but managed 11.21.2 and 2nd place. With John's help, Southern Counties also won the team event.
David Simpson and John Denyer teamed up with Bernie Stone of Sevenoaks Tri Club to take part in the Relay event at the London Triathlon on 1 August. With an average age of over 60 the team managed a very creditable 129th out of 406 teams. Bernie swam the 1500m in open water in 27.05, followed by David riding 40k in 1.25.16, and John finished off with 37.19 run in the 10k. A great atmosphere at the ExCel centre and an event to be recommended if you are interested in putting a team together. If you can't wait until next year there is a relay event at Hever Castle on 27 Sept.
"Good course, about 2 km of gentle climb early on and a strongish westerly wind to combat going out on first 2 km.
