A
select group of four Sevenoaks AC athletes contested the Beckenham 10k around,
but sadly not in, Beckenham Place Park. David Ives, Carol Beadle, Sally Shewell
and Simon Hallpike are pictured below after the race.
The scheduling of this Grand Prix event, a week after the Canterbury Half, contravenes the rule-of-thumb that one day
of recovery is required after each mile of racing. But three Sevenoaks AC athletes
had excellent runs in both races. Shewell, Beadle and Ives were the resilient trio, and they were
joined by Hallpike for the Beckenham race. Unlike the Canterbury event,
conditions were sunny and hot, which together with three notable hills, took the
edge off the runners’ finishing times.
Ives had another fine run for fifth place overall in 35:55, while Shewell was 3rd in the over-45 category (95th overall) with 45:48. Just two places behind Shewell (97th overall), Beadle was eighth in the over-35 category with 46:07. Hallpike finished 13th over-50 (77th overall) in 44:29. Full results – and picture at the start featuring D. Ives – on this link.
Five members of Sevenoaks AC travelled to Canterbury on Sunday 27 May to take part in the Canterbury half marathon, which is part of the Kent Championships and was organised by Invicta East Kent AC.
450 runners had entered the challenging out and back course which started in Merton Lane, Canterbury and followed a scenic countryside course through the villages of Petham to Waltham and back. Even though it was pouring with rain, this did not deter supporters in the villages and along the course cheering on the competitors.
This was definitely not a course to record a personal best over with one long hill approximately half way into the course and another extremely steep hill at the 10 mile mark, which proved to be too much for some who had to walk up it.
David Ives (below left) was first man home for the club in 01:18:59 in 7th overall place and 6th in the Men’s Kent Championship.
Scott Haggarty, just recovered from illness, did well to finish 187th in a time of 01:47:09.
Sally Shewell (above right), first woman home for the club in 168th place in a time of 01:45:05 was 17th in the Women’s Kent Championship and also 6th in the Ladies Masters 45-54 age group.
Carol Beadle (below) was 177th in a time of 01:45:57 and 18th in the Women’s Kent Championship.
Marion Middleton was 272nd in a time of 01:55:19 and 23rd in the Women’s Kent Championship and also 2nd in the Ladies 55+ age group. Full results.
Duncan Marsden was second and led
the Sevenoaks AC men’s team to second in a race won by former member Darrell
Smith (Tonbridge AC). In the women’s section, Heather Fitzmaurice was sixth and
led the SAC women to fourth behind winner and former SAC member Tina Oldershaw.

Sevenoaks AC, as usual, had runners entered in the London marathon, 11
this year, down on the past. In addition 12 club members were close to the
start on Shooters Hill Road marshalling as part of the 6000 strong organisation
mustered to run the fantastic spectacle. Whilst the dry conditions and lack of
wind favoured the runners, the rather warm sunny day did not! Times were down
on previous performances, sometimes due to injury and illness encountered
during the tough training regime for the race.
The race turned up some surprising results for Sevenoaks AC. Erik Folkesson flew back from a temporary assignment in Germany and managed to beat ALL his club colleagues with a time of 3 hrs 26 mins 32 secs.
Andrew Rackham, favoured to produce the fastest club time, turned in 3.35.18, just a little way back from Erik. New club member Adrian Hearle was pleased to record 3.48.20 and lady veteran runner Marion Middleton managed a very creditable time of 4.19.35 for 48th in her age category, although she was keen to beat that four-hour barrier this year. Club Chairman Paul Tabor used his strength to power round in 4.08.11. Sixty–five year old Jim Fitzmaurice, a several times entrant, showed just how resilience gains a good time with 4.24.14 for 54th in his age group. Not far behind him came Joe Russell, now over 70, to finish the race in 4.55.06. A fantastic result, that put him 39th in his age group. The most well earned result came for Gerald Ashby, a long-term club member now over 65, who after a few years battling to overcome unexpected heart problems crossed the line in 5.27.48. He can recommend fitting a heart pacemaker. Well done, Gerald!
Annabel Gordon, a welcome newcomer to Sevenoaks AC proved her potential with 5.04.13, so we can expect more to come from Annabel. Scot Haggerty maintained his long distance loneliness and ran across the line after 4.09.35. Rob Peers, who has suffered injury recently that badly affected his training programme, came home in 4.22.04.

The 18th Paddock Wood half marathon, the 4th race of the Kent Grand Prix Series, was held on Sunday 1st April in glorious spring sunshine, making running conditions ideal for the 1,400 runners entered.
This race is regularly voted amongst the best races in Runners World Top 100 and it is easy to see why as the organisation is superb with excellent marshalling, changing and baggage facilities and well stocked drink and sponge stations around the course.
Sevenoaks AC was well supported with 15 runners taking part and it was good to see some new faces amongst the “regulars”. David Ives (599 in picture below) was first home for the club in 24th place and a time of 1:19:07 and together with Andy Rackham, Chris Desmond and Rob Peers, gained 10th place in the men’s team section out of an entry of 36 teams.
Heather Fitzmaurice made a welcome return to run for the club after time off through injury and was first Sevenoaks lady home in a time of 1:40:15. Carol Beadle, Sally Shewell and Yvie Cloak made up the rest of the ladies team, gaining 12th place out of an entry of 22 teams.
The next race in the Kent Grand Prix Series is the club’s Sevenoaks 7 race to be held in Knole Park on Sunday 13th May.

Sevenoaks AC sent two teams to the recent Kent Fitness League end of season relay race which was held on a bitterly cold, bright sunny day in Swanley Park on 18 March 2007. Unfortunately, as rules required the first leg to be competed by a lady, only one team were able to compete in the official competition with the second team entered on a non competitive basis.
21 teams of 5 runners competed with each runner running a leg of 2.3 miles round the park. Conditions underfoot were perfect for running although the strong wind made the course far more challenging.
Carol Beadle, David Lee (both pictured above left), Chris Desmond (above centre), Andy Rackham (above right) and David Ives (taking over from Andy below left) made up the Sevenoaks A team and finished 4th in an overall time of 1:16:20 whilst Geoff Kitchener, Peter Dillon (below right), David Truman and Rob Carr ran for the B team.
Dartford Harriers A team won the competition in an overall time of 1:11:41.
The presentation of the overall Kent Fitness League Cross Country awards followed at the Alexandra Suite. Congratulations to David Ives who was 4th overall man in the series and to June Johnson who was F60 Champion. Official report and results for the event also gives runners times.

KENT
FITNESS LEAGUE – Capstone Park, Chatham – 25th Feb
Capstone Park, Chatham was a new venue for the final race in the 2006/2007 Kent Fitness Cross-Country League and members from Sevenoaks AC were determined to run well to improve on their Standings. Although the overnight rain had stopped, the 224 competitors found the fields very muddy and slippery, particularly on the descents but most enjoyed a true cross- country race.
David Ives (above left) ran as consistently as ever for another top 15 finish with a time of 39.32, which placed him 5th in the Overall Standings with a score of 98%. Chris Desmond (above right) hoped a strong performance would lift him up into the medals and he had an exceptional run to produce his best finishing position of the season of 18th in 40.01 which was good enough to move him up to 3rd M40 with 86.8%.
David Lee (above left) also ran well to finish in 32nd place in 42.13, with John Denyer (above right), the first of 3 M50s for the club finishing in 43.51, followed by Lyndon Collins in 45.02 and Geoff Kitchener in 46.33. In the Final Standings John Denyer was 7th M50 (3rd M55) with Lyndon Collins (below) in 12th. The Men’s team was 1 short as several members had chosen to run the Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon held on the same day.
The Ladies did manage to field a full team with Carol Beadle (below left) continuing to show great progress since joining the club a year ago and was comfortably 1st home in 48.13. She was followed by Debbie Munton (below right) in 51.32 and June Johnson in 54.52. In the Standings, Munton was 6th F45 and Johnson was 3rd W55.
Medway & Maidstone won the Combined team event with Sevenoaks in 7th place and Canterbury Harriers won the Women’s team with Sevenoaks in 12th, a lower finish than usual as the club was missing 2 key XC specialists in Heather Fitzmaurice and Sally Shewell, for most of the season.
The series finishes with the Relays at Swanley Park on March 18th, followed by the presentation of awards. Clubs may enter as many teams of 5 as they like, providing there is1 female and 1 vet included.

KENT
FITNESS LEAGUE – Oxleas Wood, New Eltham – 18th Feb
Sevenoaks AC’s David Ives (below left) found himself briefly in the lead at the 6th fixture in the Kent Fitness Cross-Country League last Sunday. He was with the leading pack as they climbed up the hill before descending the other side of the meadow and entering the woods. As the leaders were beginning to pull away, a marshal failed to send them the right way, but Baron (Swanley & Dist) and Ives took the correct route and came out at the top of the woods in the lead! In the confusion there was a slight slowing of pace before the others caught up and Andrew Pickett (Dartford H) came through to claim his 6th win out of 6.
Meanwhile Ives was delighted with his 10th place finish in a time of 33.37, off reduced training through a persistent knee problem. 258 club runners had lined up for this 5 ˝ mile race over a mixture of woodland trails with steep climbs and they had to cope with more mud than usual on a dull but windless day. The 2nd finisher for the club, Chris Desmond (above centre), paid the penalty for starting too fast a start and slipped down the field on the 2nd lap but still finished well in 26th place in 35.22. John Denyer (above right) was running well and might have been the next to finish but a sole came off his shoe at the beginning of the 2nd lap and he had to retire. However Paul Shelley came through with his best ever finish this season in 46th position in 37.27. He was closely followed by Andy Rackham, in 38.28, Rob Carr in 38.35 and Lyndon Collins in 38.59. 64 year old Jim Fitzmaurice (below left) is enjoying a fine spell of racing and was timed at 42.58.
The women were unable to field a team of 3 due to injuries and holidays so June Johnson was the only club member running and finished in 48.29. Sevenoaks Combined team (above right) finished 9th on the day and are currently 14th in the standings, while the Ladies finished 14th on the day and are 13th overall. The last race in the series will be at Capstone Park, Chatham on 25th February.
Kent Fitness League results and fixtures
10 members of Sevenoaks AC were running at Sidcup last Sunday in the 2nd race of the Kent Grand Prix series. The organisers had the worry of snow the week before and overnight heavy rain with thunder and lightning, but on the day, the weather conditions were just about ideal for this 10 mile race and this was reflected in the members’ times as everyone was faster than in the 1st race in the series – The Dartford 10 in January.
The club was missing all its Senior men so it was left to 58 year old John Denyer (above left) to lead the club home in a time of 67.15. He later commented that in his first race over the distance for over a year, he started too fast and struggled in the later stages. Rob Carr (above centre), now coming back to form, was next in 69.39. There was the usual rivalry between Geoff Kitchener and Geoff Vine (above right) with Kitchener taking the early lead before Vine overtook him on the final lap to finish in 70.51. Kitchener’s time was 71.39. Scot Haggerty was pleased with his run of73.05 but Jim Fitzmaurice probably had the best run of the day as he sliced 4 minutes off his Dartford time to finish in 75.57.
Sally Shewell, making a welcome return to road running after a serious ankle injury had prevented her from taking part in any cross-country races, was satisfied with her time of 76.39 whilst Carol Beadle was delighted with her performance as she has been unable to train for the full distance, and set a P.B. with 77.24. June Johnson went under her target of 80 minutes by 23 seconds and Yvie Cloke continued her training for the London Marathon with her time of 87.58. She is planning to use the next race in the GP series, the Thanet 20 on March 3rd, as the next step in her preparations.
Sevenoaks AC member David Ives produced a quality run to finish 10th in the Dartford 10 last Sunday. In only his 2nd race over the distance, Ives was delighted to go under the hour with his time of 59.50 particularly as he has been suffering with a knee problem recently. He later commented that his legs were feeling the effects of reduced training during the last 2 miles.
On a cold bright morning with a stiff Northerly wind, 839 runners lined up for this 1st race in the 2007 Kent Road Running Grand Prix – a series which selects 10 races of varying distances in Kent with awards given to individuals as well as teams. The race course was mainly on quiet rural roads which included 2 climbs, with the runners struggling in the later stages with a gruelling uphill finish.
Andrew Rackham (below left), with another steady run of 67.25, was the next finisher, followed by Simon Hallpike in 70.41, Rob Peers in 72.47 and Geoff Kitchener in 73.24. Peter Ash and Simon Rowe were making their 1st road outing for the club and were timed at 73.56 and 74.13, while Scot Haggerty and Jim Fitzmaurice made a welcome return to racing and were timed at 75.06 and 80.31. Other club runners were Geoff Vine 73.57, Rob Carr 77.37 and David Truman 88.09.
For the women, 62 year old June Johnson (above right) was more than pleased with her time of 80.41, finishing ahead of her younger team mates Debbie Munton in 81.22 and Marion Middleton in 84.13. She put down her performance to speed work in the gym because of the recent bad weather.
The next race in the series will be the Sidcup 10 on 11th February.
KENT
FITNESS LEAGUE – 14th January
Minnis Bay, Birchington
14 members of Sevenoaks AC faced the toughest challenge of the Kent Fitness Cross-country League when they travelled to Minnis Bay, Birchington last Sunday for the 5th race in the series. All 314 runners knew that a week of heavy rain would make most of the course very muddy, waterlogged and heavy going.
A high tide prevented the usual start on the beach, so the climb up the shingle bank was also avoided, but runners were soon ankle deep in water and mud and the 4 water filled ditches had to be manned by 2 marshals to aid runners across. Nevertheless this didn’t prevent some from taking an “early bath”.
However the series leaders, Andy Pickett (Dartford H) and Annabelle Stearns (Invicta E K), made light of the conditions to be clear winners. Andrew Rackham had a good run for the club finishing in 43.07 but 58 year old John Denyer (below left), confirming his return to full fitness, had a storming run to be close behind in 43.29. 5 members finished in the next minute – Lyndon Collins in 44.06, Paul Shelley in 44.10, Erik Folkesson in 44.11, Geoff Kitchener in 44.32 and Rob Carr in 44.59. Other finishers were Geoff Vine 45.13, Simon Lewis 53.26, David Truman 54.20 and Paul Tabor in 55.14.
The women fielded the minimum number of 3 and Debbie Munton (above right) again showed her strength over cross-country, because at 5ft 2ins the ditches threatened to swallow her up, finishing in 50.22 with Carol Beadle just behind in 51.21 and June Johnson in 55.28. The Combined and the Ladies team (below) both finished 13th on the day and after 5 races Sevenoaks are in 6th with the Ladies in 10th position. The next race will be on18th February at Oxleas Wood, Falconwood.
This Sunday sees the start of the 2007 Kent Road-Running series with the Dartford 10. The club now trains every Tuesday night at 7pm from the Sennocke Centre at Sevenoak School. For more details click “About 7oaks AC “ (2nd item down) on the menu on the left.

KENT FITNESS LEAGUE – Knole Park
17th
December
A rare outing by Darrell Smith (below) for his club in the Kent Fitness League gave Sevenoaks AC a top 3 finish in this 4th race of the series. The local running club were the hosts for this popular Cross-Country League and the course of 5 miles consisted of 2 laps in Knole Park over a hilly and very muddy route, which tested the stamina and strength of the 300 athletes and saw a few fallers on the steep sections.
Smith resisted the urge to go with the faster, younger runners on the first lap, but steadily worked his way through the field to finish 3rd in 31.06, the best club performance this season. David Ives, not training as heavily as he would like, still had a very good run to place 15th in 33.08, gaining 3 places in the run in to the finish. Chris Desmond (1st M40 for the club) also finds it difficult to train due to overseas commitments but he produced an excellent run to achieve 29th position in 33.56.
He was closely followed by the 1st of 3 new recruits from the Sevenoaks Tri Club, Neil Harris, who finished in 34.07. David Willumson was next in 36.16 and Simon Dixon came in at 36.51. David Lee (below left) split the triathletes with his run of 36.07 and John Denyer, as the scoring M50, was timed at 37.52. Other times were Rob Peers at 37.50, Lyndon Collins at 38.27, Geoff Vine at 39.13, Erik Folkesson at 39.24, Simon Hallpike at 39.41 and David Truman at 47.35.
The Ladies struggled initially to find a team, due to injuries and illness, but eventually fielded 4. Debbie Munton had the best run with 44.16 while Vikki White (above right), enjoying cross-country for the first season, was next in 46.05. Yvie Cloke, drafted in at the last minute, made a welcome return for the club and was the 3rd member to score in a time of 47.41. June Johnson was not too far behind in 48.45.
The club finished 4th on the day in the Combined Team (below) and 11th in the Ladies Team and after 4 races lie in 4th place in the Combined and 10th in the Ladies Team. The next race will be at Minnis Bay, Birchington on 14th January. Sevenoaks AC welcomes runners of all abilities to join them on the regular Tuesday evening run.

KENT VETS XC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Parkwood School,
Swanley –9th December
Only 5 members of Sevenoaks AC were able to compete in the Kent Vets Cross-Country Championships on December 9th as others had succumbed to illness or injury the previous week.
It was left to Geoff Kitchener (below left), Geoff Vine and Simon Hallpike (below right) to make up the team for the M50s, which was the first race over a demanding course in the grounds of Parkwood School, Swanley. The ground was in good condition despite recent rain and Geoff Kitchener made his usual fast “sprinter’s” start before settling down in the middle of the pack. He was closely tracked by Geoff Vine, who waited until the 3rd lap of this 9.5km course to surge past and open up a gap, which Kitchener was unable to close in the final push for the line. Vine was timed at 42.57. Kitchener had the consolation of beating one of his main track rivals for the first time this year, finishing in 43.05. Simon Hallpike ran steadily and was pleased to stay just behind his team mates to finish in 43.43.
In the M40 race, only Chris Desmond and Erik Folkesson (below) were available to run as individuals as 4 were needed for the team. Chris Desmond ran as consistently as ever to finish in 38.19. Folkesson was unlucky to go off-course on the last lap, which resulted in him losing several places before coming home in 42.22.
The next Cross-Country will be the 4th fixture in the Kent Fitness League, which will be hosted by Sevenoaks AC and will be held in Knole Park on Sunday 17th December starting at 11.00am.

KENT FITNESS LEAGUE – NURSTEAD COURT, MEOPHAM
26th November
Nurstead Court, Meopham was the venue for the 3rd fixture in the Kent Fitness Cross Country League and despite it’s deserved reputation as the toughest course of the series, a record 361 runners turned up to take on the challenge of rolling hills, tussocky grass, mud and a deep water obstacle.
16 members from Sevenoaks AC lined up at the start for this gruelling 2 lap race, which was held in bright sunshine after 24 hours of heavy rain showers. Pace judgment was crucial if the runners were to have any energy left for the final climb up to the finish and the club’s leading runner David Ives was pleased to find he stayed with his usual rivals before sprinting through the water splash to open up a gap on the hill to cross the line in 14th place in 35.50.
David Lee (above left) was with the early leaders but found the going tougher on the 2nd lap and had to concede ground to David Iddon (above right), Fraser Partridge and David Willumson (making a welcome return to Cross-Country this season), who all came through strongly to finish in 39.33, 39.39 and 39.50 respectively. David Lee had to dig deep to hold on and was relieved with his time of 40.00.
John Denyer was the scoring M50 member finishing in 41.16 and he was closely followed by a guest runner, Simon Dixon, timed at 41.23. Other runners’ times were Erik Folkesson (below left) in 41.36, Lyndon Collins in 42.18, Rob Carr in 42.39, Geoff Kitchener in 43.33, Simon Hallpike in 44.22 and David Truman in 53.40.
All 3 women ran together initially but Debbie Munton’s (above right) experience over Cross-Country helped her to be the first finisher for the club in 47.22. Vikki White showed great determination in this new discipline and was only 10 places behind in 47.49. Carol Beadle, not fully recovered from a recent illness, battled bravely to complete the team in 49.58.
The Combined team finished 7th and the Women were 12th. After 3 fixtures Sevenoaks lie 5th with the Women in 10th position. The next race will be in Knole Park on December 17th.
