| The
final race of the Kent Fitness League cross country series took place
at the demanding Oxleas Wood course in very windy conditions. Many of Sevenoaks AC's regular runners were unavailable, but fortunately Leamington-based Andrew and June Johnson were down for the race, and the club just managed to field a full team (7 men including at least one over-40 and one over-50, and 3 women, including one over-35) by cajoling Chris Desmond into action even though the 44 year old was not really fit to run. The Sevenoaks women were without Heather Fitzmaurice, who was third in the fifth race at Avery Hill. But Cathy Hughes had her best race of the series finishing 14th in 41:43 in a race won by Istead and Ifield's Debbie Percival. Hughes was backed up by Sally Shewell who was 27th in 43.24 and June Johnson, who demonstrated her rare ability to run cross country without getting muddy while finishing 60th in 49:47. Andrew Pickett of Dartford Harriers, who was second in the fifth race won by Sevenoaks' Allan Lee, won the men's race, while Allan's younger brother David led Sevenoaks home in 23rd place in 35:14. Lee junior was backed up by Mark Haworth, 34th in 36:25, Fraser Partridge, 50th in 37:31, Chris Desmond, 75th in 39:12, Geoff Kitchener, 86th in 40:22, Andrew Johnson, 88th in 40:31, and Simon Hallpike, 121st in 42:36. The Sevenoaks women were ninth in the team race won by Dartford Road Runners. This cemented the women's team at ninth in the final standings behind overall series winners Canterbury Harriers. The combined team were also ninth behind Larkfield AC on the day and ninth overall in the series won by Paddock Wood AC. Tina Oldershaw of Paddock Wood was overall women's winner, while Mike Baron of Swanley and District AC won the men's series. Best Sevenoaks AC performers were Allan Lee, 3rd man overall, and Sally Shewell, 4th woman over-45. Full results HERE.
