Sevenoaks AC members competed in the Canterbury 10 mile Road Race in
good conditions last Sunday and produced some excellent individual
performances. The race, with almost 900 competitors, is one of
Kent’s premier events and the first of the 2008 Kent Grand Prix
series. Run over scenic country roads on the edge of Canterbury the
course presents a good test with two challenging hills. The race was won comfortably by Jamie Atkinson in an excellent time of 51.51. Jamie now competes for Blackheath & Bromley club but spent his junior years with Sevenoaks. Likewise the women’s winner, Paddock Wood’s Tina Oldershaw, was also a Sevenoaks AC member as a junior. Oldershaw was over two minutes clear of the next woman in 60:24. The first Sevenoaks runner home was David Ives, second overall last year in the Kent Series, in 10th place in a fine personal best time of 58.12. He was followed by Malcolm Fisher making one of his first appearances for the club in a time of 61.17 in 28th place. Next home for Sevenoaks was John Denyer in 64.01 in 48th overall and also winner of the Masters Over 55 age category. Continuing his good recent form John’s time set a new club record in this age category. A number of Sevenoaks runners were using this race as part of their build up to spring Marathons in either London or Paris and five were clustered around the 72-73 min mark – Geoff Kitchener in 72.28, Erik Folkesson in 72.39, James Miller in 72.57 in his first race for 4 years in his London Marathon build up, Scot Haggarty in 73.43 and preparing for London, Lindsey Shing in 73.47 preparing for Paris and 6th Senior Lady. They were closely followed by Sally Shewell, an ever present in the Kent Grand Prix Series, in 77.38 and 6th Lady over 45. Also competing for Sevenoaks were Jane Lindop in 87.18, Maryanne Aitken in 106.12 and Rebecca Hunt in her first race in 110.22. Full results, and above photos, HERE. |
