Chris Rowley, the long-time leader and hot favourite, duly secured the 2005
Sevenoaks AC Handicap series trophy, albeit without participating in the final race.
On a cold Boxing Day morning with a bitter northerly wind, none of the
contenders for the top series places was able to finish in the first four over
the tough hilly seven mile handicap course, leaving Rowley’s five point series
lead intact.
In-form Geoff Kitchener was a convincing winner on the day, maintaining a
fast pace after a quick start to finish a minute clear in 47 minutes and 53
seconds. Kitchener was followed by Rob Johnson (55:32) in second and David
Simpson (68:19) in third, both of whom had their best runs of the year.
Heather Fitzmaurice in fourth was the fastest runner on the day for the
second race in succession, this time setting a personal best for the 7 mile
course of 46:40, five seconds faster than her previous best set in June 1999.
Once again the 36 year old mother of three was more than a minute faster than
the fastest man in the race.
Despite beating the second and third placed runners in the series, Geoff
Vine’s fifth place on the day was just insufficient to propel him into the
minor series placings, while Peter Dillon’s 6th place improved his score, but
not his position. Dillon remained third in the series despite beating series
second placer Lyndon Collins into seventh in the final race.
The completion of the 2005 series leads inevitably to the start of a new
series for 2006. This starts with a race over the alternate 5 mile course from
the Sevenoaks School track at 9 am on Sunday 8th January. Newcomers are very
welcome to come and run.
