SCVAC track & field league – Kent Divisions – 2018

Now we have diaries to fill in, could we think ahead to spring and summer athletics meetings, asks Geoffrey Kitchener. This is a request to women as well as men. Although we haven’t fielded a women's team in the Kent SCVAC league for a few years, there seems a good prospect that we shall be able to do so this time. And then we’ll wonder why we haven’t done so before – it's fun, and you don’t have to be a fast runner to join in.

For those who are curious as to what a league athletics meeting looks like, here is a link to a video provided by Mark Pitcairn-Knowles of a 2016 meeting, when his club, Tonbridge AC, were putting a women’s team into Division 2. Some of the athletes are good, but equally some are trying out the event, just seeking a point or two – and enjoying themselves! Look for the back markers – they are congratulated just as much as the winners, and deserve it.

No need to commit definitely at this stage – just let me know if you'd like to be kept in touch, so you can choose to take up any events nearer the time. There is bound to be an event or events which will suit – we do distances from 100m to 3000m. There is the opportunity to try out jumps and throws, there's always some first-timers for these, so don’t worry if you’re not sure you even did them in schooldays. We’ve found that, as a team, we succeed best when we fill as many events as we can, and that often involves someone trying out something new. The standard of performance is not demanding in Division 2, where we are; it counts as a success just being able to something, because this will earn at least one point for the team!

The league has men’s and women’s competitions at the same meetings. I’m attaching a full list of meetings and events – the first is on Monday 30 April at Sutcliffe Park. Please put this and Monday 14 May (Ashford), Friday 25 May (Tonbridge), Friday 15 June (Bromley), Monday 2 July (Dartford) and Monday 16 July (Gillingham) in your diaries.

This is not a binding commitment (!) but will ensure that you are kept in the loop, especially as we get nearer to the season.

Again, I’d be prepared to provide a taster session at the school track in spring, to try out various events in advance, so long as there is interest in this.
