Sevenoaks AC's speedwork coach John Denyer contested the seventh race of the club's handicap series to help build his fitness, but ended up winning the race by nearly three minutes. In warm, bright conditions, the seventy-six-year-old overtook early leader Dan Witt within the first mile and then pushed on to beat his handicap by nearly three minutes with a time of 42:34 for the hilly five-mile course. It was the best age-related performance of the day.Despite the shock of being overtaken so early on, Dan Witt held on strongly for second place, just a couple of seconds inside his handicap with 45:58. Chris Desmond was also on good form taking third place half a minute later in 38:15. Back in seventh place, David Hale ran the fastest time of the day with 36:49, while Sam Znetyniak was the fastest woman with 43:05 for fifth place. Five runners have already completed the four scoring runs needed to figure in the overall event, which consists of twelve races over the whole year. Andrew Mead continues to lead the series, with Simon Rowe three points behind in second. Rowe is six points ahead of third-placed Simon Hallpike who leapfrogged David Hale into third place by virtue of finishing fourth on the day. The eighth race of the 2024 series is over the alternate seven mile distance. It starts from the Sevenoaks School running track at 08:30 on Sunday 21st July. Details are here.
