Chris Desmond interrupted his normal fourteen-mile Sunday run to take in the eighth race of Sevenoaks AC 2024 handicap series and won it despite stopping for a drink at one point and slowing down towards the finish to preserve his handicap. Over seven hilly miles in humid conditions, but with a kind breeze, Desmond overtook long-time leader Simon Hallpike after five miles and cruised home in a time of 54:11.
Hallpike hung on for second, seventeen seconds back in 60:48, with James Baker closing but still a minute behind in 54:09. Baker's time was the fastest of the day, while Sam Znetyniak, just back from walking up Ben Nevis, was the fastest woman, forty seconds back in fourth with 62:49.
Two-thirds of the way through the series, there were no changes to the leading positions, which Andrew Mead leads from Simon Rowe. However, Rowe's lead over Simon Hallpike in third is now down to just two points. Runners need four scoring runs to figure in the overall competition and seven runners have already achieved that with four races still to go. So as well as the current leading three, and others in the table below, there is still time for a late charge from someone yet to register any series points.
The ninth race of the 2024 series is over the alternate five mile distance. It starts from the Sevenoaks School running track at 08:30 on Sunday 8th September. Details are here. Handicaps and targets for regulars are here. Newcomers are also very welcome to come and take part.
